Time format:
Years
Unit:
Mean hours (comparable)
Description:

Calculations are based on microdata from the European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS), coordinated by Eurofound. The survey aims to represent the population of all employed persons aged 15 or older.

The question considered is question Q96e from the 2015 EWCS survey in the EWCS Integrated Data File, 1991-2015: On average, how many hours per day do you spend on caring for elderly/disabled relatives? ___ hours.

The indicator is calculated as the mean number of hours out of all responses given by persons who answered the question (excluding those answering 'not applicable', 'don't know' or refusing to answer).

The selection of relevant questions from the EWCS surveys to be included in the database was based on the following criteria:

  • Additionality: EWCS questions were included where they provided additional information compared to other data (such as Eurostat data) included in the database;
  • Policy & research relevance: EWCS questions were included where they were judged to be highly policy relevant and/or showed substantial gender variation in data;
  • Recent data: EWCS questions were included only if they were last asked less than ten years ago; and
  • Sufficient sample size: EWCS questions were included only if there was a sufficient number of respondents to allow for response breakdown by EU Member States and gender.
