Description:

This indicator provides information on the number of women's shelters in the countries included in the WAVE Country Reports (2014-2025). The data refers to shelters that are both exclusive to women (women-only shelters) and shelters that are accessible to women (but also service other groups). If a cell is blank, information on the number of women’s shelters for that country/year is not available.

2013

  • There were at least 47 women’s shelters in Spain (ES) during this year. Not all shelters are accounted for in this figure. 
  • In addition to the three shelters reported in Malta (MT), there were also two that could accommodate women when shelter spaces were limited.
  • There were eight shelters reported in Moldova (MD) for this year. However, only one shelter was a women’s shelter serving women and children survivors of domestic violence exclusively.
  • In Turkey (TR), there were also 19 refuge stations which could be used when spaces in shelters were limited.
  • Data for the United Kingdom (UK) includes England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.

2014

  • Data for Ireland (IE), Poland (PL), Sweden (SE), and Azerbaijan (AZ) is based on reports for the previous year (i.e., data is for 2013).
  • Data for France (FR) on women’s shelters and shelter places was not available during data collection as it was being updated at the national level.
  • Data for the United Kingdom (UK) includes England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.

2016

  • Data for Greece (EL) and Ireland (IE) is from the previous year (i.e., data is for 2015), and data for Sweden (SE) is from the WAVE Country Report 2014, (i.e., data is for 2013).
  • Data for the United Kingdom (UK) includes England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.

2018

  • Data for Spain (ES) is from 2017; data for Sweden (SE) is from the WAVE Country Report 2014, (i.e., data is for 2013); Data for Bosnia and Herzegovina (BA) is based on the 2017 WAVE Country Report (i.e., data is for 2016).
  • Data reported for France (FR) only includes shelters that are part of the FNSF network.
  • Data for the United Kingdom (UK) includes England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.
  • Data reported for Ukraine (UA) covers 14 women-only shelters and 19 shelters accessible to both women and men victims of GBV.

2020

  • Data reported for Spain (ES) is based on national statistics from 2017. It is also based on women-only shelters.
  • Data for France (FR) only includes shelters that are part of the FNSF network.
  • Data for Belgium (BE), Italy (IT), Slovakia (SK), and Moldova (MD) is based on women-only shelters; Data for Belgium (BE) does not include women-only accommodation units in Flanders.
  • Data for the United Kingdom (UK) includes England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.

2022

  • Data for Belgium (BE) does not include living units accessible to women in Flanders.
  • Data for Ireland (IE), Spain (ES), Italy (IT), Latvia (LV), Slovakia (SK), Switzerland (CH), and Wales (UKW) is based on women-only shelters.
  • Data for Russia (RU) is based on data from the WAVE Country Report 2021 and is an estimation of the current number of women-only shelters for women survivors of violence.
  • Data for the United Kingdom (UK) includes England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.
