Description:

This indicator presents data from the EU survey on gender-based violence against women and other forms of inter-personal violence (EU-GBV survey). The first wave of this survey was conducted jointly by Eurostat, EIGE, and FRA between September 2020 and March 2024. Eurostat coordinated data collection in 18 Member States (BE, BG, DK, EE, EL, ES, FR, HR, LV, LT, MT, NL, AT, PL, PT, SI, SK, FI), and the indicators disseminated for Italy (IT) were based on the most recent national survey with available results (2014). To cover the full EU, FRA and EIGE launched a joint data collection in the eight Member States not covered by Eurostat (CZ, DE, IE, CY, LU, HU, RO, SE) following the EU-GBV survey manual. This data collection used an extended questionnaire that included additional items to reflect emerging policy priorities and research needs. This indicator is calculated based on these additional items used in the eight Member States not covered by Eurostat.

This indicator shows what percentage of the currently partnered women aged 18-74 who have experienced psychological violence by their current intimate partner during their lifetime have suffered psychological problems as a consequence of this violence. Psychological problems may include depression, panic attacks, problems with concentration, problems in sleeping or eating or other consequences.

Prevalence of psychological problems as a consequence of psychological intimate partner violence is calculated out of currently partnered women who have experienced psychological violence by their current partner during their lifetime, i.e. their current partner has ever done one or more of the following things: (1) Belittled and humiliated them, called them names while alone together or in front of other people; (2) Forbid them from seeing their friends, or from being occupied with hobbies or other activities; (3) Forbid them from seeing their family of birth or their relatives (grandparents, uncles, aunts); (4) Insisted on knowing where they are in a controlling way or tracking them via GPS, phone, social network, etc.; (5) Got angry if they have spoken to another man/woman/or accused them of being unfaithful (without any reason); (6) Expected them to ask for permission to leave the house or locked them up; (7) Kept or took away their ID card/Passport in order to control them; (8) Did things to scare or intimidate them on purpose, for example by yelling and smashing things; (9) Threatened to hurt their children or someone else they care about; (10) Threatened to take away their children/to deny custody, and/or (11) Threatened to harm himself/herself if they leave him/her.
