Description:

This indicator presents both the number and the percentage of refugee girls aged 0-18 from an FGM-practising country in an EU Member State, who have been found to be at risk of FGM.

All refugee girls are assumed to be first-generation (i.e. born in an FGM-practising country). Therefore, it is assumed that migration and acculturation do not affect FGM prevalence for refugee girls in the 'risk' age band (i.e. the risk is the same for these girls as it would have been in the country of origin). Hence, only the high-risk scenario is possible for girl refugee girls.

A refugee is someone who has been granted refugee status based on the Convention relating to the Status of Refugees signed at Geneva on 28 July 1951, as amended by the New York Protocol of 31 January 1967. According to the Convention, a refugee as someone who is unable or unwilling to return to their country of origin owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of their nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail themselves of the protection of that country; or who, not having a nationality and being outside the country of their former habitual residence as a result of such events, is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to return to it.
