Description:

This indicator presents data from the European Commission Study on the economic, social and human costs of trafficking in human beings within the EU. It shows the estimated annual costs of trafficking in human beings in the EU-27 and the EU-28 (which includes the United Kingdom).

The figures refer to the costs borne by the public based on the number of victims registered with the authorities in EU Member States in 2016. The indicator presents data for the following types of costs:

  • Coordination and prevention: Costs include projects funded by the European Commission, activities of EU agencies, and costs to Member States.
  • Law enforcement: Costs are for the criminal justice system, which is made up, among others, of the police, prosecution, courts.
  • Specialised victim services: The main costs included here are those for accommodation and some support services such as counselling.
  • Health and social protection: The increased use of healthcare and social services as compared to their use by an average person in the EU.
  • Lost economic output: Economic output is lost when victims do not participate in the legal economy, and when they have reduced participation due to health harms.
  • Lost quality of life: Victims are subject to physical, sexual and mental injuries that reduce the quality of life. A value is placed on these losses in the quality of life.

Annual costs in millions of euro are shown for female, male, and total victims.
