Unit:
Yes/No (comparable)
Description:

The indicator shows whether elections to the parliament are subject to a legislated gender quota.

Electoral gender quotas are instruments aimed at accelerating the achievement of gender-balanced representation by establishing a minimum proportion (percentage) of candidates to be filled by women and men.

The indicator counts only quotas that are applied by legislation to all lists of candidates put forward for election to the national parliament (or specific house thereof). Voluntary quotas adopted by individual political parties are not covered. In the case of the Europeant Parliament, although some Member States have a legislative gender quota applicable to elections for MEPs there is no common legislation applicable across all Member States so the indicator records no quota.
