This indicator shows the percentage of children under the age of 3 cared for by formal arrangements other than by the family, disaggregated by the weekly time spent in care. ‘Formal arrangements’ refer to the four EU-SILC survey variables:
The definition of formal care excludes any arrangements without any structure between the carer and the parents (direct arrangements). When interpreting the data, cross-country differences in maternity/paternity/parental leave arrangements and minimum compulsory school age should be taken into account.
