This indicator shows the percentage of children from minimum compulsory school age to 12 years cared for by formal arrangements other than by the family, disaggregated by the weekly time spent in care. ‘Formal arrangements’ refer to the four EU-SILC survey variables:
The definition of formal care excludes any arrangements without any structure between the carer and the parents (direct arrangements). When interpreting the data, cross-country differences in maternity/paternity/parental leave arrangements and minimum compulsory school age should be taken into account.
