B1a. Proportion of women graduates in tertiary (ISCED levels 5-8) and vocational (ISCED levels 3-4) education and training in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) – of all graduates in the study field bpfa_b__bpfa_b1__stem

Time format:
Years
Unit:
Percentage (comparable)
Description:

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics - the so-called STEM fields of education - have historically been dominated by men. This indicator looks at whether there is any evidence of the gender segregation reducing through time.

The definition of STEM fields relies on the ISCED classification of fields of education and training (ISCED-F 2013), which allows cross country comparison based on harmonised definitions. This indicator covers the following categories, for which data are provided separately and as an aggregate representing all STEM fields:

  • F05 - Natural sciences, mathematics and statistics
  • F06 - Information and communication technologies
  • F07 - Engineering, manufacturing and construction

The breakdown by level of education uses the ISCED 2011 levels of education classification and covers the following categories:

  • ED35-45 - Non-tertiary vocational education (levels 35 and 45)
  • ED5-8 - Tertiary education (levels 5-8)
  • ED3-8 - All tertiary education and non-tertiary vocational education (levels 35, 45, and 5-8)
