The unit of measure varies by indicator.

  • For indicators on the proportion/distribution of female and male academic staff (including over time, by field and by level), proportion of women heads of institutions, and proportion of women on boards, the unit of measure is percentage.
  • For the Glass Ceiling Index, the values are a relative index. Values may range from 0 to infinity, with a value of 1 indicating that there is no difference between women and men for being promoted.
  • For indicators on funding success rate difference between women and men, the unit of measure is percentage point difference (between proportion of male funding beneficiaries compared to applicants and female funding beneficiaries compared to applicants).
  • For indicators on the number of academic staff, heads of institutions, and funding applicants and beneficiaries, the unit of measure is number of persons (i.e. Head Count).

The reference period varies by indicator. The specific reference period for the data provided is clearly stated in each indicator description.

She Figures data collections takes place every three years. Publication and corresponding data files are disseminated one year after the data collection.

Data for the She Figures indicators in the Gender Statistics Database was collected by the European Commission, Directorate General Research and Innovation from EC MORE Survey on the Mobility of Researchers, the Worldwide Patent Statistical Database (PATSTAT) of the European Patent Office (EPO) and the Web of ScienceTM and ScopusTM abstract and citation database.

No cost burden has been placed on individual countries or EU Member States for the collection of the She Figures indicators.
